 COMMUNION WITH GOD

Communion with God is true prayer. It is the unfoldment in individual consciousness of His presence and power, and it makes you "every whit whole." Communion with God is in reality listening for the "still small voice." In this communion, or prayer, no words pass from you to God, but the consciousness of the presence of God is realized as the impartation of truth and love comes from God within to you. It is a holy state of being and never leaves us where it finds us.--Joel Goldsmith, The Infinite Way, pp 109-110

STEPS TO ENTER A PRAYERFUL MIND

You ask: What are the steps to enter a prayerful mind?

The main thing is a willingness simply to be in God's presence and a willingness to let go of your normal flow of thoughts.

Find a comfortable posture and for most people this is sitting with the spine as straight as possible. When the "monkey mind" starts to work and the thoughts come just be willing to let them go. You don't attach yourselves to them by following the train of thinking. The thoughts will come for there is no such thing as a "blank mind" but you simply allow them to float by peacefully.

Some people find it helpful to have a "sacred word" or a phrase to focus on as a way of dealing with the scattered thoughts. Such a word might be peace, love, etc.

Over time the thought invasions become less intrusive but the big mistake most people make is feeling there is something abnormal or wrong with them because thoughts bombard them during this prayer time. Everyone goes through this. Just be patient and set aside about 20 minutes or so to simply BE in God's presence, to experience His peace, to listen to His voice, and to let go of yourself and all of your own thoughts.

A good plan is to have about 20 minutes of centering prayer twice daily. This is a minimum. If your schedule is real hectic just do the best you can and every little bit helps.

I usually try to set aside much more time than this and I find it helpful at home to use meditation kind of music with stero headsets which gives me a sacred, set apart space and helps me not to be distracted by my familiar home environment. If I use a chapel or a church which I do as often as possible, then music would be a distraction but at home it helps me to center.
