A ROOT OF BITTERNESS

By Thomas E Durst

Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Hebrews 12:15 New Living Translation (Italics supplied)

Bitterness assumes many forms and is at the root of more physical problems than anyone has ever begun to imagine. Seething anger and resentment work like a deadly posion in the human body. Bitterness destroys us physically, spiritually, mentally and socially. People pick up "vibes" of bitterness and avoid those who are harboring it, no matter how subtly it may be hidden. We all carry an atmosphere with us that affects people around us more than we realize most of the time.

I've purged myself of bitterness and anger and remained open to love.--Tatum O'Neal

We need to watch and pray constantly for the adversary of souls never gives up (see 1 Peter 5:8). I highly recommend depending on Jesus continually (see Hebrews 12:2). He is a Friend in EVERY time of need and through every temptation (see Hebrews 4:14-16).

These wonderful words give us a HOPE that we can find nowhere else:

This was so that, by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false or deceive us, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before [us]. [Now] we have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps out upon it--a hope] that reaches farther and enters into [the very certainty of the Presence] within the veil, Where Jesus has entered in for us [in advance], a Forerunner having become a High Priest forever after the order (with the rank) of Melchizedek. Hebrews 6:18-20 (Amplified Bible)

We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It's an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post as high priest for us, in the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 6:18-20 (The Message)
