TIDINGS OF GREAT JOY

Luke 2:9-12 (New King James Version)

9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

The birth of Jesus was the most astounding thing that ever happened to this earth. Nothing like it had ever happened before. Nothing like it could ever happen again. The High and Holy One, who dwells in light unapproachable and majesty incomprehensible, became a member of the human family. The Creator of heaven, earth and the galaxies of limitless space, was born of a woman, grew up in a humble peasant home, traveled about as an itinerant preacher, died in ignominy and shame, rose from the grave and ascended to heaven. The coming of Jesus to this earth as our Savior is indeed tidings of great joy for everyone that has ever been born on this earth.

Over the years I've studied many different belief systems and philosophies and all of them contain some excellent ethical teachings which are very practical for everyday living if a person applies them. However, in the end, none of the nonchristian belief systems have the good news of a Savior. You end up being your own savior in some way, through following some methodology, adopting certain beliefs, etc. Of course, one can do that within Christianity as well but in our Christian faith WE HAVE A SAVIOR and are not left to "lift ourselves up by own bootstraps." We have a great High Priest Who is with us in ALL times of need and under every circumstance (see Hebrews 2:14-18, 4:16, 7:26). Jesus embraced ALL of the human race in His conception, birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. No other religion or philosophy of living offers that kind of hope.

I love the Christmas season and start listening to Christmas music in the Fall. Why? Because I never get tired of hearing "the good tidings of great joy" that a Savior was born. That brings joy to my heart as absolutely nothing else could ever do. During the season of Advent we hear the Savior being proclaimed from all directions and that is indeed food for my hungry soul, a well of water springing up unto everlasting life that never runs dry (see John 7:37-38).
