REFLECTIONS ON THE BOOK OF PSALMS If we read Psalms carefully we find that the path to praise and victory is strewn with suffering, feelings of anger, questioning God, and other negative human emotions and feelings that we all experience. Questions and even expressions of doubt concerning the trials and sufferings which the righteous go through are part of the spiritual path. To deny this simple fact leads to deep disappointment and sometimes abandonment of faith altogether. Those who depict the spiritual life as being one where everything is wonderful all the time are surely denying the way this present life unfolds for everyone—both believers and unbelievers. Believers find solace in turning to God and embracing His love, with the realization that there will always be unanswered questions and mysteries. This is taught clearly throughout the Psalms. I would much rather face the trials of life with faith and turning to God than without it. There is no escaping of suffering in this current plane of our eternal journey. How we deal with it makes all the difference.
