UNITY VS UNIFORMITY
True unity is a soul connection, of the heart, not founded on believing the same things. Uniformity is like everyone wearing the same uniform—believing and practicing the same things with few or no questions allowed. Organizations often require uniformity in beliefs and practices in order to be a member in good and regular standing. Throughout history those who didn’t follow the “party line” have often been demonized, persecuted, and sometimes subjected to torture and death. Over these many years I’ve experienced unity of heart and soul with several precious people with whom I would have differed widely if we had sat down and started comparing precise doctrines and life practices. What we shared in common was our love for God and others. Indeed, we had sweet spiritual communion together. That was so powerful that it subsumed everything else. I do not wish to be negative here but in my own experience the worse treatment that I’ve ever received through the years has been from those who were very strict about certain beliefs and perceived that I wasn’t conforming to them. I simply chose to move on with my life and to extend love and forgiveness. In most cases healing, at least to some degree, happened over time.
“It is not presumptuous for us to understand that each one of us, in his true nature, belongs to God, and for that reason, we should understand that divine Love not only provides for us and sustains us, but cannot do otherwise.”—Bicknell Young
