THE SIMPLE TEACHINGS OF JESUS
The point that stands out with Jesus is there is nothing sectarian about His teachings or practices. They were about the true nature of agape love, a love totally unconditional and embracing of all. He taught compassion and mercy rather than sacrifice, forgiveness instead of judgment, not to worry about the future and material possessions. Serve and love people rather than controlling or having dominion over them. Respond non-violently to evil. Bring healing at some level to everyone both near and far. These truths reach the heart of anyone who is human whether religious or nonreligious. There are no religious tests, creeds, or taking sides in doctrinal controversies required. They don’t call on people to leave one group to join another one. They tell us that God is one and the human race is one with God and with one another. There is absolutely nothing said about one elite group having everything right and all others being defective in doctrine or ritual. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the great Russian author, says it well—“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either – but right through every human heart.” Somewhere in Christian history the actual teachings of Jesus got lost as church and state united to gain power over the masses. There is not ONE WORD in any of the historic church creeds about the supremacy of His command to “love one another as I have loved you.” We need many voices calling us back to the simple teachings and healing work of Jesus. Such a movement is long overdue. Following in the steps of the Savior is a joyous and fulfilling way to live (John 12:26; Acts 10:38).
