WHAT DOES UNCONDITIONAL LOVE MEAN? Many of us were taught that it was selfish and narcissistic to love ourselves. This wrong teaching has done untold damage to millions. In fact, we CAN’T truly love our neighbor unless we love ourselves first—unconditionally. What does that mean? It means that we love ourselves just as we are—defects and all. Unconditional love for ourselves and others means there are no strings attached—none whatsoever. That is the way God loves us. He doesn’t ask us to “clean up our act” so that we may be worthy of His love. As an extension of that, we love ourselves and others in the same way. Unconditional love does not mean condoning wrong doing but provides a path of deliverance from it. There is no way we can truly love God UNLESS we love ourselves and others without conditions of any kind. When we have this love in our hearts we will be enabled to set whatever boundaries may be needed. Mistreatment of others is rooted, at some level, with self hate for the way you see yourself is the way you will also see others. God’s unconditional love for us and loving our neighbor as we love ourselves are inseparable. Ponder these verses with much prayer: Matthew 22:36-40; Galatians 5:14.
