FORGIVENESS MEANS ______
"Forgiveness means letting go of the past."--Gerald Jampolsky
We are all tempted to hold on to memories of our own mistakes and those of others and sometimes we even remind someone else of a past mistake which should have long since been forgiven and forgotten. God's forgiveness is full and complete and He doesn't remember our sins anymore after we confess and forsake them (see Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 1:18; Micah 7:19; Hebrews 8:12; 1 John 1:9). Since God has promised to remember our sins no more neither should we keep thinking about them or beating ourselves up for the rest of our lives. We need to let go of past sins, learn whatever lessons we may need to learn from them, and move on to fulfilling God's will for us each day. When we are tempted to remember the sins of others we should pray for strength to extend the same forgiveness to them that we have asked for ourselves. The main thing to remember is that forgiveness is a process that for some folks may take a long time. Part of that process is not to keep dwelling on and talking about the wrong that was done. The power of God is more than sufficient to overcome in this area and those who call on the name of the Lord will receive the very help needed (see 2 Samuel 22:4; Joel 2:32; Romans 10:13). Read all the verses to which I refer in this article and go forward with new courage in the sunshine of God's promises. Continual dependence upon God is the secret of overcoming.
