WHAT IS "THE FEAR OF THE LORD"?
The word "fear" has many shades of meaning but most of the time in the Bible it is used with the meaning of "to reverence, respect, worship, stand in awe of, etc." It includes the recognition of God (by whatever word or metaphor may be used) as transcendent (above us) as well as immanent (indwelling us). We need to always remember the awesomeness of God and be in an attitude of worship. Perhaps the most essential part of worship which is often overlooked is humility and surrender to the One Who knows all things from beginning to end and knows better than we do what is best for us. There is a strong tendency in our carnal nature to be arrogant and independent of God. Hence, the many commands to "fear God" throughout the Bible are there for a reason and we need to discover anew everyday what it means to truly "fear God" and to humble ourselves in His presence. Isaiah 6 is especially good on this. Read it often to help yourself stay on track.
“I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had no where else to go. My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day.” ― Abraham Lincoln
