JESUS CARRIED OUR SORROWS
"Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!”--Isaiah 53:4 New Living Translation (NLT)
"But the fact is, it was our pains he carried - our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us. We thought he brought it on himself, that God was punishing him for his own failures.”—Isaiah 53:4 (The Message)
When Jesus died on the cross for our sins it wasn’t the wrath of God that was being vented on Him. Instead, it was the wrath of man that killed Him. He bore the weight of “our sorrows, our weaknesses--all things wrong with us” in His own body. He felt to the fullest extent all the pain and suffering of humanity. The crucifixion wasn’t so that God could forgive us because His forgiveness has always been extended from the days of eternity (see Psalm 103:12). We needed to be reconciled to God for in our twisted thinking we believe we are separated from God, our Source, and thus live accordingly. The outpouring of love in Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself was the ultimate revelation of the love of God. When we begin to see this we become reconciled to God. “That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”—2 Corinthians 5:19 (ESV) (see also Colossians 1:19-22 which is very clear). Many false teachings about the atoning (reconciling) work of Christ have been taught for so many years that it will take a very long time for some of us to grasp its deeper meanings. We must be patient with ourselves and others for sure.
[Note: I fully recognize that the meaning of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross has been much debated in the history of Christianity. My desire is to share what I feel is very central, i.e., our reconciliation to God. ]
