NEW COVENANT LIVING
The center of the Old Covenant was a very detailed law system sometimes called the Law of Moses which consisted of some 613 commandments according to scholars. Then there were many books of commentaries regarding the implementation of all these laws. Jesus swept all of this away with a full revelation of what God was like that had never been revealed so tangibly before. The New Covenant laws are not written rules but are rather spiritual principles that govern all those who live by the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3 is especially helpful in spelling out the transition from the letter (law) to the Spirit, going from glory to glory as by the Spirit of the Lord (see 2 Corinthians 3:18). These spiritual principles are written upon the tables of the heart (see Hebrews 10:15-17). This was foreshadowed in the Old Testament (see Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 36:26). Spiritual laws (principles—qualities) are a golden thread running through the entire New Testament. Here are just a few examples of spiritual qualities (or laws) in very specific clusters. Read them often: Matthew 5-7; 22:37-39; John 13:34-35; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Galatians 5:22-23; Philippians 4:8; 2 Peter 1:5-9. These principles are manifested individually through the leading of the Holy Spirit (see John 4:21-24; Romans 8:14). As spiritual beings in God’s image and likeness we all reflect these principles in varying degrees in accordance with our uniqueness and individuality. Looking at human beings from this perspective and honoring their expressions of the Divine brings a whole new dimension of richness to life.
